Colosseum

The Colosseum was the largest and most impressive building of its time. Completed in AD 80, it was the centrepiece of the Roman Empire, a symbol of power and dominance. Over the next 800 years, thousands of prisoners of war, criminals, Christians and gladiators lost their lives in violent and bloody combat, to amuse and entertain the Roman crowds.

Today it is one of modern Rome’s most popular tourist attractions, there to sample the atmosphere and history of what has long been seen as the iconic symbol of Imperial Rome.

The Colosseum Exhibition lets you find out how the Romans built the Colosseum and why it was so important. Discover the truth about the lives of the gladiators - stars of the bloodthirsty contests that took place within its walls...
